چکیده

More than 30 years ago diabetic patients with endstage renal disease (ESRD) were considered as inappropriate candidates for a chronic dialysis programme because of a very high mortality rate and poor longterm survival w1x. In spite of this negative attitude against diabetics on dialysis, not only more and more diabetic patients have been accepted to chronic renal replacement therapy, but diabetes has become the most common cause of ESRD, leading to renal replacement therapy in the western world w2x. Although the prognosis has improved markedly, mortality and morbidity are still higher in diabetic compared to non-diabetic patients undergoing haemodialysis (HD), peritoneal dialysis (PD), or after renal transplantation.

Management of anaemia in United Kingdom renal units: a report from the UK Renal Registry.

BACKGROUND Morbidity and mortality of patients undergoing renal replacement therapy is influenced by the adequacy of correction of renal anaemia. The Renal Association has set standards for attainment of a target haemoglobin of 10 g/dl. This study compared the management of anaemia in dialysis patients in nine renal units in the UK. METHODS A cross-sectional analysis was carried out on data s...

Continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis and renal transplantation: a five year experience.

Continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis is a new and increasingly popular method of routine dialysis, but its effect on renal transplantation is uncertain. A non-randomised comparison was made of the outcome of grafting in patients who had been treated before transplantation with continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis with that in patients treated with haemodialysis. During the five years,...

Outcomes in patients on home haemodialysis in England and Wales, 1997-2005: a comparative cohort analysis.

BACKGROUND The UK national policy promotes expansion of home haemodialysis, but there are no recent data on characteristics and outcomes of a national home haemodialysis population. METHODS We compared incident home haemodialysis patients in England and Wales (n = 225, 1997-2005) with age- and sex-matched incident peritoneal dialysis, hospital haemodialysis and satellite haemodialysis patient...

Comparison of patient survival in non-diabetic transplant-listed patients initially treated with haemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis.

BACKGROUND It is still not known whether patients survive longer on one modality of dialysis compared to the other. We have tried to answer this question using data from the Scottish Renal Registry. METHODS To avoid the confounding effects of co-morbidity, we limited our survival analysis to those patients listed for a renal transplant and excluded patients with a primary renal diagnosis (PRD...

Relation between Malnutrition–Inflammation–Atherosclerosis (MIA complex) in Diabetic Patients with Peritoneal Dialysis

Objective: Atherosclerosis disease, inflammation and malnutrition have strong association with end stage renal disease (ESRD). Diabetes mellitus (DM) is the most commonly ESRD causes. Diabetic nephropathy (DN) could be associated with inflammation. Type 2 diabetic patients with advanced nephropathy show the highest levels of inflammatory markers. This study was designed to determine the associa...
